Hourly Rate Calculator — Salary to Hourly (and Back)

Convert annual salary to hourly rate using hours/week and weeks/year. Gross conversion only — not tax or payroll advice.

By Rehan Baqir

Quick answer

Hourly equivalent ≈ annual salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year). A common full-time assumption is 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours, but your schedule may differ. Convert with an hourly rate calculator for gross comparisons — not take-home pay, tax, or employment advice.

Job posts bounce between “$32/hour” and “$75,000/year” as if the translation were unique. It is not. The bridge is always an hours assumption. Change hours, change the equivalent. An Hourly Rate Calculator makes the division obvious — as long as you write the assumption down.

Gross mathematical estimates only. Not tax, payroll, legal, or financial advice. Take-home pay depends on withholdings and benefits. See the Disclaimer.

The core conversion

Hours per year = hours/week × weeks/year
Hourly ≈ salary ÷ hours per year
Salary ≈ hourly × hours per year

Common full-time sketch

40 × 52 = 2,080 hours

| Salary | ÷ 2,080 ≈ hourly | |--------|------------------| | $41,600 | $20 | | $62,400 | $30 | | $83,200 | $40 |

When 2,080 is the wrong divisor

  • Academic-year schedules with unpaid summers
  • Compressed 9/80 or four-day weeks
  • Roles with substantial unpaid overtime expectations (salary may cover more hours than 2,080)
  • Part-time offers

Example — $50,000 over 36 hours × 48 weeks = 1,728 hours → ≈ $28.94/hour, not $24.04.

Comparing two offers

Offer A: $70,000 salary, true ~40×52
Offer B: $38/hour, expected 35 hours × 50 weeks = 1,750 hours → ≈ $66,500 gross

Without hours, “$38 beats $70k” is meaningless. Normalize both, then compare benefits separately (health coverage value is not in the calculator).

Freelance translation (rough)

Employee-style equivalent often understates a sustainable freelance rate because:

  • Not all hours are billable
  • Self-funded benefits and downtime
  • Tools, insurance, and admin

Illustrative approach (not advice): choose a salary-like target, estimate realistic billable hours, divide, then add overhead margin. Track actual hours with the Hours Calculator.

Raises and adjustments

A 5% raise on $30/hour → $31.50 — easy with the Percentage Calculator. Apply percent changes to one basis (hourly or salary) consistently.

What this calculator will not do

  • Income tax / net pay
  • Overtime premiums
  • Employer payroll taxes
  • Equity or bonus valuation

Those need payroll tools or qualified professionals.

Limitations

Outputs are planning estimates based on the schedule you enter. Misstated hours produce tidy but wrong equivalents. Full terms: disclaimer.

When you share a converted number — in a negotiation note or a freelance quote — attach the phrase “assuming X hours/year.” Then anyone using the Hourly Rate Calculator can reproduce the same gross figure instead of arguing past each other with silent assumptions.

Key takeaways

  • Always state the hours-per-year assumption next to any salary↔hourly conversion.
  • Gross calculator output is not net pay after taxes and benefits.
  • Freelance billable hours are usually less than 40×52 employee hours.
  • Percent raises apply cleanly once you pick a consistent rate basis.
