How the Math Works
Adding work hours sounds trivial until you hit 7:45–12:10 plus 13:00–17:20 and try to do it in your head. Timesheets, freelance logs, and study planners all need reliable duration math that respects 60-minute hours.
Vertex Solutions' Hours Calculator totals time spans and helps you move between hours:minutes and decimal hours. Keep planning math fast without uploading your schedule.
What the Calculator Shows You
Enter start/end times or duration segments as the interface provides. The calculator returns:
- Total duration in hours and minutes (and decimal hours when shown).
Use multiple segments for split shifts or study blocks with breaks removed.
When This Calculator Helps
- Weekly timesheets — Sum daily worked time before submission.
- Freelance billing — Convert tracked blocks into billable hours.
- Study planning — Total focused sessions across a day.
- Shift handoffs — Measure coverage length between clock times.
Using the Calculator
- Open the Hours Calculator on Vertex Solutions.
- Enter each time block (start/end or duration).
- Subtract breaks if they are unpaid or non-billable.
- Read the total hours and minutes.
- Convert to decimal hours if your invoice or payroll form requires it.
Where the Estimate Falls Short
Employers may round punches, auto-deduct meals, or cap daily overtime differently. This tool does not encode labor law, union rules, or payroll tax. Overnight shifts require careful start/end entry.
Outputs are scheduling arithmetic estimates — not legal, HR, or financial advice. See our disclaimer.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Treating 1.3 hours as 1 hour 30 minutes — 0.3 hours is 18 minutes; 30 minutes is 0.5.
- Forgetting unpaid breaks — Inflates totals and invoices.
- AM/PM mix-ups — A 12-hour clock error can add or remove 12 hours.
- Double-counting overlapping blocks — Keep segments non-overlapping.
Getting the Most Out of It
- Example: 09:00–12:00 and 13:00–17:30 with a paid schedule → 3h + 4.5h = 7.5 hours.
- Pair totals with the Hourly Rate Calculator to estimate pay from hours × rate.
- Average similar daily totals with the Average Calculator for a typical day figure.
- For date spans (not clock hours), use the Date Calculator.
