How the Math Works
Leaving a tip should be quick math, not a phone calculator scramble at the table. Whether you are dining out, paying for delivery, or splitting a group check, a clear tip amount and fair per-person share keep the end of the meal simple.
Vertex Solutions' Tip Calculator takes your bill total, tip percentage, and party size, then shows the tip, grand total, and each person's share. Results update as you type, and nothing about your receipt leaves your browser.
What the Calculator Shows You
Enter three inputs — bill amount, tip percentage, and number of people — and the calculator returns:
- Tip amount — bill × tip rate.
- Grand total — bill plus tip.
- Per-person share — grand total divided by party size (when splitting).
You can try different tip rates instantly to see how the total changes before you pay.
When This Calculator Helps
- Restaurant dining — Compute 15%, 18%, or 20% tips without mental math.
- Group splits — Divide tip and total evenly across friends or coworkers.
- Delivery and takeout — Apply a custom percentage to food subtotals.
- Service comparisons — See the dollar difference between tip rates before choosing one.
Using the Calculator
- Open the Tip Calculator on Vertex Solutions.
- Enter the bill amount — the subtotal or total you want to tip on.
- Enter the tip percentage — for example, 18 for an 18% tip.
- Enter party size if you are splitting (use 1 for a solo bill).
- Read tip, grand total, and per-person share below the inputs.
Worked Example
Dinner bill of $84.50 and you want to leave a 15% tip:
- Tip amount: 84.50 × 15 ÷ 100 = 12.675 → $12.68
- Total with tip: 84.50 + 12.68 = $97.18
Splitting between 3 people? Each pays 97.18 ÷ 3 = $32.39. Try the same figures in the calculator above to confirm.
Where the Estimate Falls Short
This tool applies a single tip percentage to one bill amount. It does not automatically separate sales tax, mandatory service charges, delivery platform fees, or hotel resort fees. If your receipt already includes a service charge, decide whether an additional tip is appropriate before entering numbers.
Currency rounding means equal splits may not sum to the exact grand total by a few cents. Results are everyday math estimates, not financial or tax advice. Review our disclaimer for full terms.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Tipping on the wrong base — Decide whether the tip applies to pre-tax subtotal or taxed total before calculating.
- Double-tipping on service-included bills — Check the receipt for automatic gratuity on large parties.
- Party size of zero — At least one person must be entered for a valid split.
- Ignoring platform fees — Delivery apps may show separate service fees; tip math here is only what you enter.
Getting the Most Out of It
- For a quick 20% tip, move the decimal of the bill one place left and double it — then verify with the calculator.
- When splitting, agree on the tip rate first so everyone sees the same per-person number.
- Pair tax questions with the Sales Tax Calculator if you need to separate tax from subtotal before tipping.
- For generic percent-of-amount checks, the Percentage Calculator covers the same math without a tip-specific layout.
