How the Math Works
Fuel is often the largest variable cost on a road trip or delivery day. Estimating liters or gallons before you leave helps you budget cash and compare routes — even though real-world consumption never matches a lab sticker perfectly.
Vertex Solutions' Fuel Cost Calculator combines distance, fuel economy, and price per unit into an estimated fuel volume and total cost. All math stays in your browser.
What the Calculator Shows You
Enter distance, economy, and fuel price. The calculator returns:
- Estimated fuel needed
- Estimated total fuel cost
Keep units consistent with the labels on the form (for example, miles with MPG, or kilometers with L/100km).
When This Calculator Helps
- Road trip budgets — Rough out fuel before booking lodging.
- Commute comparisons — Contrast two routes or vehicles on the same distance.
- Fleet and delivery planning — Sketch daily fuel spend from planned mileage.
- Price sensitivity — See how a price change shifts trip cost.
Using the Calculator
- Open the Fuel Cost Calculator on Vertex Solutions.
- Enter trip distance in the unit shown.
- Enter fuel economy using the matching efficiency unit.
- Enter price per gallon or liter.
- Review estimated volume and cost.
Where the Estimate Falls Short
Sticker economy assumes specific test conditions. Hills, traffic, cargo, and aggressive acceleration raise consumption. The tool does not add tolls, parking, or maintenance. Price is whatever you enter — not a live pump feed.

Mistakes to Avoid
- Mixing imperial and metric units — Convert first with the Unit Converter if needed.
- Using peak highway MPG for city loops — City figures are usually lower.
- Forgetting the return leg — Round-trip distance is often double one-way.
- Ignoring seasonal blends and AC load — Summer and winter trips can differ.
Getting the Most Out of It
- Example: 300 miles, 30 MPG, $3.50/gal → 10 gallons → about $35.
- Add buffer (5–15%) for headwinds, traffic, and detours when budgeting cash.
- Estimate drive time separately with the Hours Calculator for full trip planning.
- Re-check local pump prices on the day of travel — the calculator cannot know them.
