How the Math Works
Course grades rarely treat every assignment equally. Homework, labs, midterms, and finals often carry different weights, so a simple average of percentages can mislead. A weighted grade calculator applies your syllabus the way instructors intend.
Vertex Solutions' Grade Calculator combines scores and weights into an estimated course grade. Use it to track progress and plan remaining work — then verify against your learning management system.
What the Calculator Shows You
Enter each category’s score and weight. The calculator returns:
- Weighted grade estimate — sum of (score × weight) ÷ total weight.
You can leave future categories blank or test hypothetical scores to see how the overall estimate moves.
When This Calculator Helps
- Syllabus planning — Translate category weights into a running estimate.
- Final exam goals — Back-solve what score you need on remaining work.
- Group projects — Model how a project grade shifts the course total.
- Parent/student check-ins — Explain weighted grading with transparent math.
Using the Calculator
- Open the Grade Calculator on Vertex Solutions.
- List each graded category from your syllabus.
- Enter the score earned (or expected) as a percentage.
- Enter each category weight.
- Read the weighted grade and adjust remaining scores as needed.
Where the Estimate Falls Short
Schools may curve, round at strange thresholds, drop lowest scores, or cap extra credit. This tool does not import LMS data or enforce institutional rules. Always treat the output as an estimate and confirm with your instructor.
See our disclaimer for terms on calculator estimates.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Averaging category percents equally — That ignores weights and often overstates easy categories.
- Weights that do not match the syllabus — Even a 5% typo changes the estimate.
- Mixing points and percents — Convert everything to one system first.
- Forgetting dropped scores — Remove dropped items before calculating.
Getting the Most Out of It
- Example: Labs 20% @ 95, Midterm 30% @ 88, Final 50% @ ? — test final scores until you hit your target overall.
- For an unweighted mean of similar quizzes, the Average Calculator is enough.
- Convert letter cutoffs with the Percentage Calculator only after you know your school’s scale.
- Keep a copy of the syllabus weights next to the calculator to avoid memory errors.
