PDF Page Order for Booklet Printing
Booklet printing imposes pages out of reading order — 8-page signatures, creep, and duplex flip confuse everyone. How to export PDF page order print shops actually need.
The zine PDF had 22 pages. The print shop added two blanks without telling the author — poetry landed next to blank white mid-poem. Reading order in the file was fine. Signature math wasn't.
Booklet printing thinks in sheets, not scroll direction.
Reading order vs imposition
Your PDF: page 1 cover, 2 inside left, 3 inside right… sequential.
Press sheet (8-page example): one large sheet prints 8, 1, 2, 7 on one side and 6, 3, 4, 5 on reverse — fold, nest, staple.
You don't arrange this unless you're the prepress house.
Default rule: export single pages in order; tell shop "saddle stitch booklet."

Troubleshooting
How should pages be ordered in a PDF for booklet printing? For most print shops, send single pages in normal reading order (1, 2, 3…). The shop imposes spreads for saddle stitch or perfect bind. Only impose yourself if the shop explicitly requests a imposed PDF with printer's marks.
Why must booklet page count be divisible by 4? Saddle-stitched booklets print on sheets folded in half — each physical sheet contributes 4 page surfaces. Blank pages pad short documents to multiples of 4.
What is saddle stitch booklet printing? Folded sheets nested and stapled through the spine — common for programs, zines, catalogs under ~64 pages typically. Page order on press is imposition, not reading order.
