PDF page order for booklet printing

A saddle-stitched booklet prints on folded sheets, not in the order you read, and a page count that is not a multiple of 4 gets blank pages whether you planned them or not. For most shops, export single pages in reading order and say "saddle stitch booklet." Add the blanks yourself with the layout app or Merge PDF. Impose printer spreads only when the shop asks for them. A pre-imposed file blocks the shop's creep adjustment.

A 22-page zine is the usual surprise. The shop added two blanks, and a poem landed next to a white page in the middle. Reading order in the file was fine. The sheet math was not.

Reading order and imposition

Your PDF is sequential: page 1 is the cover, page 2 is inside left, page 3 is inside right, and so on.

An 8-page press sheet prints 8, 1, 2, and 7 on one side and 6, 3, 4, and 5 on the reverse. Then it is folded, nested, and stapled.

You do not arrange that sheet unless you are the prepress house.

The default is single pages in order, with a note that the job is a saddle-stitch booklet.

Page count

Pad with blanks you meant to add. If an index would otherwise point at the wrong page, mark a blank "This page intentionally blank."

Put the blank at the end with Merge PDF, or add it in InDesign.

Home duplex is a different setting

An office printer's Booklet setting is not commercial imposition. Print an 8-page sample before you run 200 copies.

Creep

Many pages on thick paper make the outer pages stick out past the inner ones. The shop adjusts creep in imposition software. Tell them the paper weight early.

Cover as its own file

Shops often want:

• interior.pdf in reading order
• cover.pdf as a spread that includes the spine width

Split PDF if a combined export mixed them.

Bleed on the cover

Cover bleed wraps the spine. See the bleed section of Printable PDF Margins. The interior may not need full bleed.

Color and file size

Proof list

Handouts are not booklets

A presentation slides PDF handout puts several slides on a page. That export is not a booklet.

Perfect bind and saddle stitch

Perfect binding allows a page count that is not a multiple of 4, plus a cover. Spine width depends on page count and paper thickness. Saddle stitch stops making sense above about 64 pages. Switch binding.

Creep, roughly

Paper caliper times (sheet count / 2) is about the creep adjustment. The shop calculates it. You provide an accurate page count and the paper spec early.

DIY imposition

Online calculators for zines and self-publishing can build an imposed PDF from reading order. Check that output before you spend toner on 200 copies.

How 8 pages land on 2 sheets

When you send an 8-page sequential PDF (Page 1 through Page 8) to a saddle-stitch printer, imposition places two pages on each side of two duplex parent sheets:

A 10-page draft needs 2 intentional blank pages, typically inside the back cover, added in the layout app or with Merge PDF, to reach 12 pages. That is 3 parent sheets times 4 pages per sheet.

Limits

Do not export reader spreads yourself (for example, pages 8 and 1 merged onto one wide sheet) unless the print shop asks for imposed flats. A pre-imposed PDF stops the shop's RIP from applying creep for paper thickness.

Send sequential single pages and let the shop impose, unless they told you otherwise. Pad to a multiple of 4 on purpose, so a blank does not appear in the middle of a poem.

Ask for binding type, paper weight, and whether the cover is a separate file before you export. Imposition is their job. The page-count math is yours.
