Word to PDF

Browser-basedPrivate

Select a file

Upload a .docx Word file. Text content is converted to PDF in your browser.

Note: Client-side conversion preserves text content. Images, tables, and advanced formatting may not transfer perfectly.

Introduction

Sharing a Word document is not always practical — recipients may not have compatible software, and formatting can shift between devices. Word to PDF converts your .docx file into a PDF that opens consistently everywhere. This is a lightweight, browser-based conversion focused on text content rather than pixel-perfect layout reproduction.

What This Tool Does

The tool reads your .docx file with mammoth.js, extracts the plain text, and lays it out on standard A4-sized pages using pdf-lib. Paragraph breaks from the original document are preserved, and long documents flow across multiple pages automatically. The result is a clean, readable PDF — but without the original formatting, images, or styling.

When to Use It

  • Quick text sharing — Convert a draft essay, meeting notes, or letter to PDF for email distribution.
  • Submission portals — Some forms accept only PDF; convert a simple text document without opening desktop software.
  • Archiving plain content — Preserve the text of a document in a format that will not change with software updates.
  • No Word installed — Create a PDF from a .docx on a machine that does not have Microsoft Office.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Upload your .docx file to the tool.
  2. Click Convert to extract text and build the PDF.
  3. Wait a moment — longer documents with more text take slightly longer to layout.
  4. Download the PDF and open it side by side with your Word file.
  5. Compare content — verify all text transferred and paragraph breaks look reasonable.

Limitations

This is intentionally a basic converter. Tables become plain text rows, images are omitted entirely, and formatting like bold, italic, font size, and color are stripped. Headers, footers, page numbers, and footnotes from the Word document are not reproduced. Legacy .doc format is not supported — only .docx. For documents where layout matters, exporting from Microsoft Word or LibreOffice produces far more accurate results.

Common Mistakes

  • Converting a design-heavy document — Brochures, resumes with columns, and reports with charts will lose most of their structure.
  • Uploading .doc instead of .docx — The older format is not supported. Resave the file first.
  • Assuming images transfer — Any document where images carry essential information needs desktop conversion software.
  • Skipping the comparison step — Always check the PDF against the original, especially for multi-page documents where page breaks may fall in unexpected places.

Tips

  • For best results, use simply formatted documents — single column, plain text, minimal styling.
  • If you only need to share text content, this tool is faster than installing office software.
  • After converting, run the PDF through Compress PDF if file size matters for email.
  • For round-trip editing later, remember that PDF to Word can extract text back — but formatting will still be basic.

Key Benefits

  • Convert .docx files without Microsoft Word installed
  • Processing happens entirely in your browser — no cloud upload
  • Produces a clean, readable PDF from plain text content
  • Automatic page breaks for long documents
  • Instant download with no account or subscription

Limitations

  • Basic conversion only — complex formatting, tables, images, and headers are not preserved
  • Only .docx format is supported, not legacy .doc files
  • Custom fonts, colors, and styles from the Word document are lost
  • Embedded objects like charts, SmartArt, and equations are not included

Supported Formats

DOCX

Privacy & Security

Word to PDF processes files locally in your browser using mammoth.js and pdf-lib. Your documents are never uploaded to our servers.

Common Issues & Solutions

Document appears to be empty

The .docx may contain only images, tables, or formatting with no extractable text. Add text content or use desktop Word for complex documents.

Unsupported file format

Only .docx files are accepted. Save legacy .doc files as .docx in Word or LibreOffice before converting.

Output formatting looks wrong

This tool extracts plain text only. For pixel-perfect conversion, use Microsoft Word or LibreOffice to export PDF directly.
